The First Steps

You’ve been thinking about building your dream home for awhile, so now what? The process may seem overwhelming, but by taking small steps you’ll find the project much more manageable. Here are a few items you should take care of long before the foundation stakes are driven into the ground.

Know Thy Budget

This is perhaps one of the most important pieces of information you need to gather. Price per square foot can vary from home to home, so you need to know exactly how much you’re willing to afford. Talking with a trusted loan officer so you clearly understand what kind of loan you qualify for is a must. Are you selling the house you’re currently living in? Will there be proceeds that can go towards the new home? All of these factors and many more affect what your final number is. The dollar amount you choose will shape what your future home will look like.

The Site

Whether your new lot is located in comfortable suburbia or on an acreage in the country, make sure you perform some due diligence concerning the local schools, amenities such as proximity to grocery stores, gas stations, doctor’s offices, and the distance in your daily commute. Make sure you would like living in that spot.

Your Contractor

Partnering with a competent builder makes your life easy and it allows your project to go smoothly. This is not an area that you want to skimp on research.
